Journalist Award PUNKT: Climate Change, Weather Modification and the Coronavirus

18.10.2021 | CustomerAffairs

The skiing season in Kitzbühel in Austria begins in October - the first snow fall is one month later. The photo series "Schnee von Morgen" (Snow of Tomorrow) from photographer Elias Holzknecht deals with the changes of alpine landscapes caused by the climate change and by humans in a critical yet humorous way. Holzknecht convinced the jury of the Journalist Award PUNKT especially with his great storytelling. Furthermore, the jury highlighted the photographic quality and the previous in-depth research.

The winner of the acatech photography fellowship also deals with the topic of climate change: With "Creatorem Terrae Et Caeli", Maximilian Glas aims to make weather modification (changes of the weather through technology) visible. He asks, among other things: "Should we use technology to solve problems, that only arose because of industrialization and progress ideals?"

Climate change and the destruction of our natural environment also play an important role in the spread of new viral diseases, such as the coronavirus. The interactive calculator "So schnell verbreitet sich das Coronavirus in Innenräumen" (This is how fast the coronavirus spreads indoors) from ZEIT ONLINE demonstrates the risk of an infection with the coronavirus for different scenarios. Julius Tröger and his team collaborated with the Max-Planck-Institute for Chemistry and visualized the state of science at the time of publication through interactive animations - and won the award in the category multimedia.

This years award ceremony will once again take place in a virtual event as part of "acatech am Dienstag" instead of a festive event in Berlin. Next to the award winners and laudators Nicola Balkenhol (Head of Multimedia Online, Deutschlandradio) and Heiner Müller-Elsner (freelance photographer), Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus (Bielefeld University) and Helmuth Trischler (Deutsches Museum) will honor the winners. You can register for the event on November 23 at 7:30 p.m. here.
